What is syndesmotome?

The sindesmotome is a dental tool used to cut the periodontal ligaments that attach the teeth to the alveolar bones. The aim of the sindesmotome is to facilitate the extraction of teeth and prevent the recurrence of periodontal diseases, since the ligaments are cut precisely and without damaging the adjacent tissues.

This type of screwdriver, designed by Dr. Chompret, has an angled shape and a sharp tip that allows easier access to hard-to-reach areas in the mouth. The shape and design of the Chompret screwdriver make it particularly useful for the extraction of impacted teeth, such as wisdom teeth.

What is the difference between the periostotome and the syndesmotome?

The periosteotome and the syndesmotome are two different surgical tools used in dentistry. The main difference between them is that the periostotome is used to cut periosteal tissue, while the syndesmotome is used to cut periodontal ligaments.

The periostotome is used to make incisions in the periosteal tissue and separate it from the underlying bone, allowing access to the root of the tooth and facilitating its extraction. On the other hand, the syndesmotome is used to cut the periodontal ligaments that attach the teeth to the alveolar bones, which facilitates tooth extraction and prevents recurrence of periodontal disease.

In summary, although both instruments have a common purpose, the removal of a tooth, they are used at different times during tooth extraction and for different purposes. The periosteotome is used to separate the tissue from the periosteum, while the syndesmotome is used to cut the periodontal ligaments.
