The polishing technique is performed both in the laboratory, in the case of prosthetic structures, and in the clinic. There are two polishing methods that we will apply depending on the material or tissue on which it will be performed. We are talking about abrasion and cutting.

The first is applied when a rough and hard surface slides over a smooth and softer one causing grooves, indentations or grooves, obtaining a slightly irregular surface. Whereas with cutting, a structure is removed by a tangential action (like a carpenter's plane) so that the blades of the instrument achieve a more regular removal of material than with abrasion.

Depending on the amount and form of structure removal we will be talking about devastated (initial form of removing matter), carving (when it is removed trying to give a certain shape) or polishing (usually the final step in which a smooth and shiny surface is reached).
